Live, Loft, Learn

Sometimes magazine editors hand you niches you never knew you needed. Such was the case with Las Vegas Life Home & Design (later H&D). Upon returning to Las Vegas after my stint as an English teacher in New York City, I landed a 400-word assignment on desert gardening. In addition to teaching me how to grow asparagus, that article led to numerous writing assignments about home and garden design, local artists, designers and boutiques. The 2000-word real estate feature story mentioned on the cover below explores new and traditional lofts across the Las Vegas Valley. (Click the cover to read the clip.)

Art for Heart and Hearth

Having written a great deal about local and legendary Las Vegas, I found this set of profiles to be the most rewarding I have crafted. In addition to learning about how to select and collect art, I met two of the most important visual artists ever to live and work in Las Vegas, Tim Bavington and Annie Lee. The latter became a good friend and beloved mentor. Annie Lee meant more than words can express to the black artists and small business owners, mostly women, who she helped and inspired. By clicking the magazine cover below, you will find profiles about Lee, Bavington and gallery owners, Naomi Arin and Barbara Lee Woolen.
